Last Chance to See (M!Shepard/Kaidan, 1337 words)

Thirty Increasingly Inaccurately Named Days of Writing 33/30: …, simple, future, lost, first, LAST CHANCE TO SEE.

“You’re making me dizzy, Shepard,” Kaidan whispered, closing his eyes as Shepard turned his head a little, kissed him again, laid down beside him on the bed.

It felt too damn hot. The Normandy was rushing to the nearest mass relay at maximum speed, and the air con had been reduced to 30% of its usual strength to free up the amps for the drive core. So it was hot, and humid.

Shepard offered him some water, cold with ice cubes rattling around in the bottom of the cup, and watched intently as Kaidan downed its contents.

“Feeling better?”

As we’ve now been de-anonymised and the Big Bang is in full swing, I can announce that my Mass Effect Big Bang project is titled…

RADIO SILENCE.

I’ll be working with the immensely talented stellarsparrow1 who will be producing lovely fan art for the story, which will be set in a post-synthesis universe where Shepard (male) romanced Kaidan Alenko.

And now… the blurb. Enjoy!

Eight years after the Battle of Earth, Major Kaidan Alenko vanished, distraught from the loss of Commander Shepard. The world turned on, and the benefits of the synthesis of organic and synthetic life continued to reveal themselves. Alliances were forged, new economies were born overnight, and a generation of trans-people, with unprecedented genetic diversity and abilities from birth, is born.

Twenty-two years after the Battle of Earth, NC-Sec officer Natasha Loftus has her shuttle shot down whilst patrolling a virtually uninhabited moon. She wakes in the underground apartment of a war veteran, a reclusive biotic who was there at the final push to the Conduit in London. Natasha soon learns that Alenko has become a man obsessed with finding a way to bring Commander Shepard back from the dead, using the signal broadcast by the Crucible as a template. And—impossibly—Cerberus know about this, and want to stop that from happening.

Seriously, go and take a look at her art. It’s incredible. ↩

Kaidan would have been fooling himself if he didn’t feel a little nervous, a tiny bit apprehensive as he rang the bell for Shepard’s cabin.

“It’s open.”

The bulkhead rolled apart. He saw the back of Shepard’s head through the glass, and gingerly took a few steps forward.

They’d slept together last night. Not had sex. Slept together. He’d fallen asleep in Shepard’s arms, listening to their breathing to try and numb himself to the throbbing sensation inside his head.

Lost

…because I can’t be bothered to deprecate a tag properly. Also, gimme yer prompts. Still. I can’t promise I’ll fill them, but it gives me something to try, at least.

“We can always ask.”

“We won’t need to,” Shepard said, tapping his fingers against the door as the train slowed to a halt.

“You could always use your omni-tool as well, y’know.”

“We won’t need to.”

Commander Shepard he might be, but Kaidan seriously doubted that he could feel his way around a city with his mind.

The doors chimed. “This is St. Paul’s. This train terminates at Hainault, via Newbury Park.”

Shepard strode to the left with confidence, cutting through the throng like a knife.

“Shepard!”

“Yes?” he said, not stopping because he knew that’d get in people’s way.

“Wrong way.”

He stopped, and a commuter swore as she crashed into him. Shepard looked up. Central line / Westbound trains via Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus ↑

Another look behind him as another commuter excused him to the side of the platform. Way out ↑

“Come on,” Kaidan said, grabbing Shepard’s hand and pulling him along the platform. “I’m navigating from now on.”

shajs:

It’s my personal headcanon that Shepard is a short guy and everyone keeps telling him ‘You looked so much taller in the vids!’ when they meet him. And when he and Kaidan make out he has to bend his head slightly backwards and gets a sore neck after a while.

Plus, they overuse medigel to cure their stubble rashes.

…I kinda imagined it this way too. Except Shep(loo) being around average height for a 2100s space marine, and Kaidan naturally being a tad taller.

(Fun fact: people’s heights tend to change depending on the surface gravity they’re accustomed to. Astronauts come back from the ISS taller than they were when they went up. So it’s not a fixed thing, it’s fluid and can change.)

So, people often post fanmixes or songs that knock them “right in the feels” when it comes to fandom.

This song just screams Mass Effect 3 to me. Regardless of relationship, Shep, character, it just fits so beautifully with the tragic Wells-eque air of the third game. (The song comes from Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. If you’ve never listened to it, I command you to listen to it in full starting with The Eve of the War.)

Yeah, I’m aware it’s generic. But it’s such an excellent fit.

This guy looking depressed while eating a sandwich in the snow is Spectre Kaidan Alenko.

He had a troubled childhood. His mom was downwind of a transport crash in Singapore, causing him to develop biotic abilities. As a teenager, he was pressured into joining the Biotic Acclimation and Temperance program on the edge of the solar system.

He was fitted with dangerous L-2 biotic implants. The procedure involved putting him to sleep, drilling a hole in his skull and inserting a computer into his brain. The implants were buggy, and caused many people to get terminal cancer. He is now plagued with migraines and will be for the rest of his life.

When he was at BAaT his trainer was brutally violent. The kids were often beaten if they didn’t perform well enough. One day, the trainer attacked another student and Kaidan leapt to her defense. The trainer stabbed him in the face and he killed him in self-defense. He was sixteen years old.

He watched one of his best friends die. He was on a recon mission to Eden Prime with Commander Shepard, and his squadmate was shot clean dead by two heretic geth recon drones.

He almost died arming a nuclear bomb that killed another of his squadmates. He was shot and badly injured on Virmire and pleaded with Shepard to go back and rescue Ash Williams. He survived, and she died in the blast.

He almost died on Mars. A Cerberus android slammed him against a wall repeatedly and damaged his implant, and his spine.

He watched his partner die. He was evacuated from the Battle of London just as Commander Shepard was shot by Harbinger when running for the Conduit. They had only been together for seven weeks.

His mom and dad died in the war. His mom got killed in a tunnel collapse in San Francisco, his dad got killed by a Husk in Colorado.

Next time you see a sad photo of Kaidan going around the extranet with a silly caption, remember that, and remember why he looks so sad.

OMG that’s so sad. #brb crying

So, there’s this thing called the Drabble-Matic and it can actually generate slash fiction on demand.

The result when I fed in a simple ManShep-Kaidan scenario is displayed above. Beautiful.
